JR Pass Calculator

Enter the trips your visitors will take and see whether a rail pass beats buying tickets. Since the 2023 price rise it often does not.

When you have decided, buy the Japan Rail Pass or a regional pass online:
Buy the pass on Klook

For the nationwide JR Pass, Klook mails a paper exchange order (free worldwide delivery, bookable up to 180 days ahead); you swap that paper order for the pass at an exchange office in Japan, so order early enough for the post to arrive before you fly. Confirm current prices and coverage on the official pass page before buying.

How the verdict works

We add up the single-ticket price of every trip you ticked, then compare that point-to-point total against the matching nationwide JR Pass, ordinary or Green to match the seat class you choose, plus a few common regional passes. The cheapest option wins. Single fares are priced at the fastest train a passless traveller would actually buy: the Nozomi reserved fare on the Tokaido and Sanyo, the Sakura reserved fare on Kyushu, the Hayabusa reserved fare on the Tohoku, and the Kagayaki reserved fare on the Hokuriku (the Asama for Karuizawa and Nagano). The pass covers Hayabusa and Kagayaki (with a reservation), so on those lines the fastest train is also what a pass holder rides; it does not cover Nozomi or Mizuho, so there a pass holder takes the slightly slower Hikari or Sakura free or pays the special ticket (see below). A pass only pays off once your travel adds up to more than the pass price.

Is the JR Pass worth it?

There is no blanket answer, which is why this page is a calculator. Since the nationwide pass jumped to ¥50,000 for 7 days, a typical Tokyo to Kyoto round trip with a couple of day trips usually comes out cheaper on single tickets or IC card taps. The pass starts to win when visitors cover long distances in a short window, for example Tokyo to Hiroshima and back plus more. Tick your real trips above and let the numbers decide.

Where to buy and the price difference

You can buy the nationwide pass on the official site or in Japan (paid in yen), or from an overseas sales agent as an exchange order. The overseas-agent price is higher. As checked on the official price page on 2026-10-13:

Pass (adult)In Japan / onlineOverseas agent
Ordinary 7-dayJPY 50,000JPY 53,000
Ordinary 14-dayJPY 80,000JPY 84,000
Ordinary 21-dayJPY 100,000JPY 105,000
Green 7-dayJPY 70,000JPY 74,000
Green 14-dayJPY 110,000JPY 116,000
Green 21-dayJPY 140,000JPY 147,000

Children aged 6 to 11 pay half the online price; the overseas-agent child price is set separately. Source: official JAPAN RAIL PASS price page, checked 2026-10-13.

Nozomi and Mizuho

The nationwide JR Pass does not cover the fastest Nozomi and Mizuho trains on the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen without a separate special ticket; with the pass you ride the slightly slower Hikari or Sakura at no extra cost. The single-ticket fares in the calculator are the realistic fares a traveller without the pass would pay, which on the Tokaido and Sanyo routes is the Nozomi reserved fare (the Hikari fare is a few hundred yen lower). So with the pass you either take the free Hikari or Sakura, or add the Nozomi or Mizuho special ticket, which costs the same for an ordinary reserved or Green seat:

Children and Green car

Children aged 6 to 11 ride at a child fare: about half the adult fare on single tickets, and roughly half the pass price. Under 6 travels free when not using a reserved seat. For the Green car, the calculator compares Green single tickets against the Green pass, not against ordinary tickets, so the verdict is right for someone who actually wants Green seats. A child's Green single halves the fare and the limited-express charge but pays the Green-car surcharge in full. Where we have not yet sourced a Green single fare for a trip, picking Green shows "Green fare not available for this route yet" and gives no verdict for that trip rather than guess.

Regional passes that beat the national pass

If your visitors stay in one area, a regional pass is often far cheaper than the nationwide one. The calculator lists these in the comparison so a cheaper regional option shows up, but each pass only covers its own area, so check the coverage map on the official page before buying:

Regional pass prices were checked 2026-09-07 and are the adult, ordinary price; confirm current prices and coverage on each pass's official page.

FAQ

Is the JR Pass still worth it in 2026?

Often not for a short, Tokyo-centred trip. It becomes worth it when you cover a lot of long-distance ground in one 7, 14 or 21-day window. Use the calculator with your real trips rather than a rule of thumb.

Can I use the JR Pass on the Nozomi?

Not without buying a separate special ticket. The Hikari and Sakura are covered and only a little slower. See the Nozomi and Mizuho section above for the special-ticket prices.

Is it cheaper to buy the JR Pass in Japan or from an overseas agent?

Buying in Japan or on the official site (paid in yen) is cheaper than an overseas exchange order. The price table above shows the gap for each pass.

Does the JR Pass cover the airport trains?

It covers JR airport trains such as the Narita Express and the Haruka, but not private-railway services like the Keisei Skyliner. Those are separate tickets.

Fares and pass prices change and depend on seat type and season. These are estimates checked on the dates shown; confirm current fares on the official pages before you buy.
