Fares checked on the date shown on each route page (2026-10-13 or 2026-10-14). Fastest times read 2026-10-21 from JR East timetable (train pages from Tokyo, October 2026, weekdays) and JR Central timetable, Tokaido-Sanyo-Kyushu Shinkansen, from 2026-03-14 (PDF).

Reading the table

Each fare is the adult one-way ordinary reserved seat on the train named on the route page: the Nozomi on the Tokaido and Sanyo, the Sakura on the Kyushu, the Hayabusa on the Tohoku, the Kagayaki to Kanazawa and the Asama to Nagano and Karuizawa. The fare is the same in both directions. The time is the fastest train in the timetable, which is often a single early or late Nozomi; most trains on the line take a few minutes longer.

The route pages add the child and Green fares, the train the JR Pass covers on that line, how to buy, and the large-suitcase rules.

JR Pass and the fastest trains

The nationwide JR Pass does not cover the fastest Nozomi and Mizuho trains without a separate special ticket; you take the slightly slower Hikari or Sakura at no extra cost. On the Tohoku and Hokuriku lines the fastest trains, Hayabusa and Kagayaki, are covered with a seat reservation. To see whether a pass pays off for your visitors' whole trip, use the JR Pass calculator.

Routes not listed

Kyoto to Osaka is usually done on JR local and special rapid trains at a much lower fare (the calculator's figure is that fare), Tokyo to Odawara for Hakone is priced for a local or limited express, and Tokyo to Nikko is a Shinkansen to Utsunomiya plus the JR Nikko Line, so those three stay in the calculator but have no route page.

If the calculator says the nationwide pass wins:
